A 76-year-old pickpocket who has been arrested 37 times -- and convicted 30 times -- was indicted yet again in a Manhattan Criminal Court on Tuesday after police officers allegedly caught her pinching wallets at a grocery store last week.
Court documents say Katherine Kelly was apprehended last Wednesday at a Fairway grocery store in New York City's Upper West Side after she took the wallet of an undercover sergeant. Another police officer said he saw Kelly snatch the sergeant's wallet from a shopping cart and hide it under her bra.
Kelly -- who officials say has used numerous aliases over the years -- was charged with grand larceny in the fourth degree at her criminal court arraignment last week, and appeared before Judge Barry Kamins on Tuesday, according to Tracy Golden of the district attorney's office.
Jack Ryan of the New York City Department of Probation told CNN that Kelly has a long history with the law.
"We knew of her as far back as 1981," he said, noting that her first arrest -- for petty larceny -- appears that year. Most recently, Kelly served six months in jail for burglary; at the time of last week's arrest, police had a warrant in her name for failing to report for probation.
Kelly's Supreme Court arraignment is scheduled for November 17.
