A WIDNES woman is trekking part of the Great Wall of China in October to raise cash for Help the Aged.

Shirley McNally, who works in pensions for the DWP, needs to raise £2,800 for the charity, having already paid £99 herself.

Widnes Rugby Union Football Club has donated gym membership for her to get in shape for the 63km walk over five days.

Shirley is running fund-raising events between now and her August deadline, including a race night at WRUFC on Monday, January 26, and raffles throughout the year.

She said: “I’ll be leaving the UK to embark on the trip of a lifetime. I chose the start date to coincide with the Chinese New Year celebrations and I practised tai-chi for five years.

“I’ve always been interested in Chinese culture and that side really appealed to me, but I decided to raise cash for Help the Aged because of my experience working in pensions.”
