INDIA: Council to monitor schemes for the aged

NEW DELHI / The Hindu / April 17, 2010 ‘A number of old age care homes and recreation centres have been opened' By Special Correspondent Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, 72, on Friday said that her government has constituted a senior citizens' council to monitor the status of various schemes for the aged. Speaking at the inauguration of a State-level workshop-cum-consultative meet on “Empowering Elderly” organised by the Department of Social Welfare and NGO “Anugraha”, Ms. Dikshit said every senior citizen has the right to live with dignity and her government has been offering the highest pension in the country of Rs.1,000 per month to the aged. Besides, the Chief Minister said, a number of old age care homes and recreation centres have been opened, senior citizens have been provided concessions in DTC buses and special arrangements have been put in place for them in the Delhi Government-run hospitals.
