US soul singer Solomon Burke died Sunday aged 70 at Amsterdam's international airport, just after arriving on a flight from Los Angeles.

The cause of death was not announced.

Among the singer's best known songs was the 1964 hit Everybody Needs Somebody to Love, which was covered by the Rolling Stones.

The song was reintroduced to later generations through the Blues Brothers movie, which featured the tune extensively.

Burke was to give a concert in the Netherlands on Tuesday.

The soul musician was inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001, and Burke also left behind another personal legacy: 21 children.

He began his career in Philadelphia, in the north-eastern United States and was already on the road to fame at the age of 14, with gospel songs like Christmas Presents from Heaven.
