AUSTRALIA: Calls to check senior citizens are ok

PERTH, Western Australia / Sky News / Health / July 10, 2011

There are calls for authorities to ensure the nation's seniors aren't left alone at home sick, dying or dead for months or even years after a sad case in Perth.

The remains of a 75-year-old man were found on Thursday in a central Perth state housing unit where he died up to two years ago despite neighbours urging housing department officials to check on him.

The discovery has prompted the West Australian opposition to demand government checks on older people in state housing, but Premier Colin Barnett says that's a gross overreaction.

In Sydney days earlier, police found the body of an elderly woman in an inner suburban home eight years after her death, again only after repeated attempts by neighbours to alert authorities.
